COmmon Business Oriented Language is a programming language that is the primary business application language on mainframes officially adopted in 1960. COBOL was defined by the CODASYL committee basing on the Hopper's FLOW-MATIC language developed in the 1950s for the UNIVAC and the IBM equivalent, the COMTRAN.
